March 2020 was an eventful time for Jachie. Within the space of a few weeks the facility was visited by Mr Patrick Joyce, a retired UK ophthalmologist, representing Eye Aid for Africa, and then by a team from Germany representing AKTION VOLTA AUGENKLINIK E.V. The German team, headed up by Professor Spitznas (a retired German professor of ophthalmology) stayed three weeks to finish off the completion of the surgical facilities at Jachie (initially started in 2019), to dedicate an ambulance vehicle donated by German ophthalmologists, and to install, commission, and to train local staff in the use of, a laser designed to provide SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty) to treat glaucoma.
As a result, Jachie ‘clinic’ was officially upgraded to a ‘hospital’ by the Ghanaian medical authorities.
Below is a short video showing the community of Jachie celebrating Jachie eye ‘clinic’ being officially upgraded by the Ghanaian health authorities to Jachie Eye Hospital.
